THE IMPACT OF OIL AND GAS IN THE SWIFT CURRENT COMMUNITY
The journey this now city has gone through to get it to where it is today has been a long and winding road. The settlement of Swift Current was formed in 1883 around the expansion of the railway. During these years, the economy revolved around the rail, creating employment almost exclusively related to serving new rail buildings and workers. Also during this time, there was a large ranching community consisting mainly of sheep and cattle. In these early years, Swift Current even stationed a military base and troop mustering area during the Riel Rebellion.
Today both the railway and farming still play key roles in the economy, but it's been the discovery of oil and gas in the 1950's that has made the real difference in community growth and prosperity. Swift Current has played a key role in Saskatchewan being the second largest producer of oil in Canada, which the majority of it being conventional oil. By being the largest hub for oil and gas in southern Saskatchewan, the city has reaped the benefits of being the home for a large variety of service companies. This has helped create long lasting jobs, and by working together with these businesses, the community as a whole has thrived even through down turns.
The Fosterton well, about 27 miles north of Swift Current was discovered in 1952, as is described as one of the largest oil strikes on the continent at that time. This was the beginning of the cities hustle and bustle 'oil town' reputation. Today this well is still producing while new wells are continually being drilled year round. The most common types of wells are listed below.
- Viking oil is basically light and can be found about 1000 meters underground. The high density of the wells in the Kindersley area makes drilling rigs in the area lucky to have short moves after well completion. Oil recovery rates are occasionally low but the high oil in place (OIP) makes it profitable. Furthermore, vertical wells previously thought to be empty have been retained through the use of horizontal technology. These vertical wells have been discovered to contain substantial amounts of light oil.
- Mannville oil can be found closer to the 1500 meter mark. It is below the surface areas around Swift Current and has fewer concentrations of wells in comparison to Viking wells. Oil found in this formation is considered heavy. They mainly consist of continental sand and shale in their base. This is then followed up with different types of sandstone and bits of marine shale.
- The oil that is found in the Bakken formation is usually recognized as light. It has been compared to the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in relation to its grade and the possibility of being 'sweet'. This is the most recently discovered type of well among the three and it has had its fair share of drawbacks. Until the advancement of horizontal drilling, it has been difficult extracting profitable oil from the rocks. Hydraulic fracturing techniques combined with horizontal wells have made the Bakken formations one of the largest discoveries in modern times.
