THE HISTORY OF OIL IN THE LLOYDMINSTER AREA

The first discoveries in the Canadian heavy-oil belt where made in the Lloydminster area in the early 1900's. Back then, small diameter perforations were used, and slow rod-fall velocity limited the pump jacks to around 10m³ per day. These operators had to deal with small amounts of sand from the oil the were bringing up, which added to the struggle of profitability. Through trial and error, these small producers learned that although sand made oil recovery harder, the wells that continued to generate sand ended up being the better producers.

Today, this region contributes to the provinces staggering output of national oil and gas, producing approximately 3/4 of Canada's market. These oils include light crude, heavy crude, crude bitumen, synthetic crude, and natural gas. Most of this production has come from its enormous oil sand deposits, which thanks to continually improving technologies, has steadily increased in recent years.

Because of the advancement of the oil sands and the general type of oil found in this region, major investments have been made in the city of Lloydminster. One such investment has been the Upgrader, which converts heavy oil to a premium quality, low-sulphur synthetic oil. This plant also produces and ships out diesel fuel.
