SOME HISTORY OF OIL AND GAS IN THE KINDERSLEY AREA
Oil and gas date back to the early 1930's in Saskatchewan, and as it stands today, we are approximately the 2nd largest producer of oil and the 3rd largest producer of natural gas in Canada. This area has played a key role in these numbers, and has positioned itself as one of the leaders in Saskatchewan oil and gas.
There are 3 classes of wells found in this area of Saskatchewan, all having unique qualities and challenges. The names of these wells are 'Viking', 'Mannville', and 'Bakken'. All of these wells get fairly equal attention, and with current technology, are being efficiently and responsibly extracted throughout the year.
- The Viking class of oil is generally light (840 Kg/M³), and found approximately 1000 meters underground. The density of these wells in the Kindersley area are quite high, so the drilling rigs in the area are fortunate to have short moves after well completion. At times the oil recovery rate can be quite low, but because the OIP (oil in place) has such high potential, it continues to be profitable. Additionally, once thought empty vertical wells have been re-tapped through horizontal technology, and have been found to have large amounts of this light oil remaining.
- The Mannville oil is found closer to 1500 meters below the surface in the areas around Kindersley, and have a more sparse concentration of wells than Viking wells. The oil found in these formations is considered heavy (1000 Kg/M³ or more), and consists of mostly continental sand and shale in the base, followed by various types of sandstone and bits of marine shale.
- Oil found in the Bakken formation is generally recognized as being light (840 Kg/M³), and has been compared to the West Texas Intermediate (WTI) in terms of it's grade and likeliness of being 'sweet'. This well type is the most recently discovered, but had its share of setbacks. Until the proficiency of horizontal drilling, the profitability of extracting the oil from the rocks has been very difficult. Through the use of hydraulic fracturing technologies, paired with creating horizontal wells, has made the Bakken formation one of the largest discoveries in recent times.
